Primary school with one teacher and one headmaster

Community Primary School, Akpugoeze in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State, this may be the dawn of a new beginning.
For many years, the pupils had known only their headmaster and  one other teacher as the only ones teaching in the school.
But recently, the natives of Ofemmiri community, Akpugoeze, rose up to say the situation was no longer acceptable to them.
It was their home-coming and general meeting where they placed on the front burner issues relating to the problems of primary schools in the community.
In his welcome address at the meeting, the President General of Ofemmiri Community Development Union, Mr Livinus Onuigwe, a quantity surveyor, reminded the community leaders that they had relied on self-help efforts to move their community forward in the past, saying that it was through such self-help efforts that an illustrious son of the community single-handedly built a shopping centre for the community.
Emphasizing the importance of the meeting, the president general recalled that indigent students from the community got scholarship awards from another illustrious son whom he noted was also providing the villagers with free medical services.
At the end of the day, the schools received the desired attention as the community leaders who have returned for the meeting both from home and abroad visited the Community Primary School Ofemmiri where they lamented the dearth of teachers and quickly recruited four volunteer teachers to complement  the two that were on ground.
Onuigwe, who briefed newsmen at the end of this years’ meeting, explained that the yearly meeting was compulsory for every adult in the community.
“It is often used as a forum to discuss the development of the community in terms of education, health, security, rural roads and streets, youth development, sports, culture, assistance to widows and the less privileged in the community, among others.
“Every year we try to do one thing or the other to develop our community. For this year, we discovered that the Community Primary School, Akpugoeze had only two teachers, the headmaster and one other.
“What the community did was to look for volunteer teachers some of them who were retired, but still very active. Also some of our illustrious sons volunteered to be paying their salaries just to ensure that the school is functional and provides good and quality education to our people,” he said.
He disclosed that they also donated computers to the schools as they discovered that some of the pupils in the village do not know what a computer looks like.
“We also employed the services of some youth corps members to teach them computer.  It is the same situation with other neighbouring schools like the Central School Akpugoeze, the story is the same either two or three teachers. We have Community Primary School, Eziogwu, it’s the same thing. Personally, I made attempts to see the headmaster at Community Primary School Akpugoeze, but it was not possible; you hardly see the headmaster. He is always going for one programme or the other, one training or the other; it was pathetic as little children roamed around aimlessly during school hours,” he said.
Onuigwe said that they believed that if basic training was “lost at this initial stage it will be disastrous in the development of these children,” saying that was why they decided to engage teachers and pay them.
“For this year, we employed about four teachers which is not even enough for the entire primary one to primary six.
“Also, we were able to energize the community by purchasing and installing a brand new transformer to replace our old and vandalized transformer, which has kept the community in darkness for some time now.  We bought a new transformer for ourselves; we didn’t have to wait for the government; it’s our contribution to the development of our community and the state at large.
“We also organized a lecture on youth development because we believe that the youth must be empowered; they must be thought what to do. They are not just the future leaders; they are also the leaders of today. So, we started from the beginning to catch them young, teaching and showing them the right way to go; all in a deliberate attempt to mould them to what they should  be.

17m ransom demanded by UBTH nurses abductors

The gunmen who abducted two nurses of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Edo State, have demanded the payment of N17m for the release of the victims.
The nurses, identified as Osemelu Lydia and Ovbiosu Bose, had last Wednesday been kidnapped at Oluku in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.
They were said to have been on their way home, after picking up their children from school, when they were forcefully taken away in a vehicle to an unknown destination.
It was, however, gathered that the abductors had contacted the relatives of the victims and demanded the sum of N15m for the release of one of the nurses and two million naira for the other.

But the ‎UBTH branch Chairman of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Austin Osigbeme, ‎told our correspondent on Tuesday that the kidnappers later reduced the ransom.
‎Osigbeme also noted that the fami‎lies of the two nurses had been in pain since they were kidnapped a week ago.
He said, “They have not released them; they are asking for ransom. They started with N15,000 and two million naira but have started beating it down‎ to one million.

“But these are poor people that have no money to pay and that is why we are having that delay.

“They (families) have been apprehensive and having feelings of uncertainty, not sure of what is happening to their wives and sisters.”

The leadership of NANNM had earlier vowed to embark on an indefinite strike to protest the incessant abduction of its members and demand the release of the two nurses.
But Osigbeme said that the proposed strike had been shelved because

“we will not allow people to force us to behave in the way that they want us to behave.”

“We decided to call off the strike and see what happens this week. We are praying,” he added.

PROLONGED SITTING CAN KILL FASTER THAN IMAGINED

Prolong sitting is one habit that receives less attention from most of us. While many jog or do one form of physical exercise or the other, the cardiovascular death though declining has not reached the target. Our entire modern world is constructed to keep you sitting down. When we drive, we sit. When we work at an office, we sit. When we watch TV, well, you get seated. Health-enhancing benefits of physical activity, this alone may not be enough to reduce the risk for disease.

Prolonged sitting, meaning sitting for eight to 12 hours or more a day, increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 90% as shown in a study.  Those with prolonged sitting hours have a 15 to 20 per cent higher risk of heart disease, death from heart disease, cancer, death from cancer. It then means that avoiding sedentary time and getting regular exercise are both important for improving your health and survival. Engaging in 30 to 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous daily exercise does not mean it’s proper for you to “sit on your rear” for the rest of the day.

Many of the currently available jobs are sedentary in nature; thanks to advent of computers and information technology (IT). While IT is useful we need to apply ourselves and prevent prolonged sitting by the computers. Prolonged sitting is not good for our health. Legs have the largest bulk of muscle in the body and when at rest, calories are not burnt and blood flow rate is reduced enhancing the ability for the blood to come together and form clot in those that are predisposed to it. Apart from this, when you sit for too long, the body weight increases leading to obesity.

Obesity is associated with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, heart attack, stroke, and cancers.  My concern is that these diseases are increasing in our communities traversing through the old and young, high and low social class, literate and those educationally underprivileged group. If you find yourselves obese or overweight, kindly reduce your weight by at least by 10%. People are dying at the prime of their ages; we shall all eat the fruits of our labour. Watch your weight, keep moving your legs and avoid sedentary lifestyles.

Start by examining the time you spent on computer, watching television, treating files in your offices, when in excess it leads to cardiac problem. We must all be active irrespective of our age. Physical activities have been shown to be of tremendous help in maintaining a healthy cardiovascular state. There is no age limit when it comes to physical activity. Just because a person ages does not mean he or she must become inactive. The older a person gets, the more important it is to remain as physically active as possible.

Studies have shown that “It is not good enough to exercise for 30 minutes a day and be sedentary for 23 and a half hours. Also, “Decreasing sitting hours is not a replacement for exercise, and exercise is not a replacement for sitting more. They are both important to do, and do more of.”   This is the key for prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

If there is no abuse, there is nothing you can't overcome in marriage - Omotola

The beautiful mother of four Omotola, recently celebrated her 20th wedding anniversary. In an interview with The Nation, she opens up on the secret of her marriage, aging and beauty.

On being married for 20 years

It’s just been fun. I’m married to my friend and should I say, my destiny supporter. There’s no relationship without its challenge. When people hear that we are celebrated twenty years, they think we must be really without stress or anything, but I just want to let people know that if you are determined to do it in life, if you are determined to make it, you will make it. You have troubles in life generally anyway; either with your parents, or with your siblings.

So it’s just like that. It’s a normal thing. Don’t use any opportunity or any quarrel in a relationship with your spouse to justify the fact that everybody says marriage is hard. It’s not any harder, I think, than any other relationship you’ve had in life, maybe with your business partners or with your siblings. I understand that there are some marriages that have more challenges than others. If there is abuse involved, I think you should find your way out quickly. But if there is no abuse, then there is nothing you cannot overcome. Given that, I have had a very wonderful time with my spouse. We’ve just been friends. That’s what matters most.

On having grey hair

Well, I’m 38 years old so I’m not scared. But even if I was 51, that’s not the point. I’m growing younger if you actually think about it. Even babies these days have grey hair. Anyways, that’s not the point. The point is, in life, I think we should all embrace who we are. And I think when people are sufficient or feel sufficient in life, and you feel like you’re achieving, you really wouldn’t be afraid of age.
I think people are afraid to age when they actually look at where they are in life and feel like they’ve not achieved much. They feel like time is running by. I think that’s actually the reason why people are afraid of aging if you really go into it. But if you are contented in life and know that all fingers are not equal and you are where you are meant to be, because you could actually be six feet below. That you’re alive and well in itself is a reason to celebrate age. I don’t think that’s a reason why not.

On her definition of beauty

I think beauty, first and foremost, is in the confidence. If you are a confident woman and you understand your self-worth, I think you are beautiful. That is why sometimes you see some girls that you think, visually, in your own definition, are not aesthetically beautiful.
But any time they walk into a room, everybody turns. And you wonder why everybody is looking at that girl. She’s not even that fine. If you get it together, she is a confident woman. So beauty for a woman, even for men but especially for women, is knowing your self-worth, understanding yourself, understanding your body and working with what you have. Most women don’t have everything. Even I don’t have everything but there are things that you have, so work with what you have.
